Laurie Lewis & The Right Hands

Wed 20 May, 8:00pm at Red Brick Auditorium

Tickets: £14

Laurie Lewis is a bona fide bluegrass legend from California. A GRAMMY Award winning artist, she has written some of the most enduring songs in the genre and has released around 20 albums over the years, performing with scores of acclaimed artists including Linda Ronstadt, Tim O’Brien and Ralph Stanley. A hugely respected bandleader, songwriter, singer and musician, Laurie has influenced many of the next generation of renowned American roots artists, including Molly Tuttle, Front Country, Della Mae and countless others.

Winner of multiple International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, Laurie performed on the 1997 Grammy-winning release The Songs of Bill Monroe, and more recently she was Grammy nominated for her album The Hazel and Alice Sessions (2016), a tribute to female bluegrass trailblazers Alice Gerrard and the late Hazel Dickens. Laurie’s band The Right Hands features several of the most talented musicians on the American acoustic scene today, marrying spectacular musicianship (on fiddle, banjo, guitar and double bass) with spine-tingling vocal harmonies to complement Laurie’s powerful voice.

With skilful interpretations of traditional classics as well as Laurie’s original songs, Laurie and her band perform an enormously entertaining mix of evocative acoustic Americana and barnstorming bluegrass.

“I first knew Laurie by her considerable reputation as a fiddle player and a writer of songs. When an opportunity came along to sing with her I seized it. Her voice is a rare combination of grit and grace, strength and delicacy.”     – Linda Ronstadt

“One of the contemporary acoustic music scene’s most skilled and enduring performers”
                                                                                                       – Acoustic Guitar magazine

The past three decades have seen Laurie Lewis establish herself as one of the leading lights of American acoustic music, a genuine national treasure. It’s not too much of a stretch to suggest that if the ‘Americana’ format wasn’t invented for her, it should have been.”     Sing Out

“Laurie Lewis continues to successfully walk the high wire above esoteric country, combining elements of bluegrass, folk and pure country to form her own seamless mix…Lewis is impossible to categorize.”       – Billboard
