We are excited to be taking part in this year’s Independent Venue Week. Taking to the Square Chapel stage is rapper and grime artist Novelist, Americana folk singer Caroline Spence and jazz vocalist Zoe Gilby.

We are delighted to announce the 2018 Mercury Prize shortlisted artist and the 2019 Independent Venue week ambassador – Novelist, will be with us on Saturday 2 February for one night only!

Novelist, is the a 21-year-old, English rapper, grime MC and producer from the south London borough of Lewisham. He was a founding member of The Square crew and was nominated for Best Grime Act at the 2014 MOBO Awards. As a younger teen, Novelist was elected deputy young mayor of Lewisham!

Skinner is an artist from Leeds, creating a range of electronic music with pop/r’n’b/hip-hop/soul influences topping them off with her powerful and potent voice. BBC Introducing presenter Jericho Keys describes her sound as ‘Sassy, soulful and sexy’. Her songs are regularly, broadcast on stations including BBC Radio 1, BBC 1XTRA BBC Radio 6, and more. You can find Skinner on Spotify.

Caroline Spence + Support from the Harmony Jar

This young songwriter from Charlottesville Virginia proves she is every bit as serious. Having won numerous songwriting awards, Caroline has delivered a record to meet the expectation: Quite simply, 11 songs of gorgeous Americana that remind us of why we fell in love with the genre in the first place. We are delighted to be welcoming Caroline to Halifax as part of Independent Venues Week. We are thrilled Hebden Bridge based trio The Harmony Jar, will be supporting Caroline with country, folk and Americana.

Zoë Gilby Quartet

Friday 01 February, 8pm

Zoë Gilby is a vocalist and songwriter, making a stunning impression on the music scene today. Her compelling original compositions are written with double bassist husband Andy Champion. Her stockpile of music reaches a wide range of more contemporary material from composers such as Pink Floyd to Kate Bush, with influences from Sheila Jordan and Joni Mitchell. Touring the UK and internationally, she continues to perform at prominent jazz festivals and venues.
