A newly restored version of the 1920 Classic of German Cinema. Coming to us all the way from the Murnau Foundation in Germany.
If you love Metropolis and Nosferatu, then this 1920 classic slice of German Expressionist cinema is for you. Based on a legend in Jewish mysticism, and set in 16th century Prague, this gothic horror is a classic of its genre and its influence can be seen in many later films like Frankenstein. The film will be accompanied by a live score from The Harmonie band.
This 2018 digital 4K restoration was based on the A-negative, cut from the best takes and preserved in the Cinematek (Royal Film Archive of Belgium). In 1921 the negative was heavily altered and cut for American distribution. The digitization intends to restore the A-negative as close to the previously lost German version as possible.
