Anglo-Saxon Art in Yorkshire.

Professor Michelle Brown.

This illustrated lecture will explore the rich artistic heritage, in all media, of Yorkshire during the time that it formed part of the powerful and creative Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria (c.600-850). It gave birth to influential thinkers such as Bede and Alcuin of York and widely respected women such as St Etheldreda and St Hild, whilst Northumbrian artists and craftspeople created artworks such as the Lindisfarne Gospels, the Ormside bowl, the Coppergate helmet and the Easby and Otley crosses, to name but a few. These intricate and intriguing works reflect a heroic and formative age in which late Antiquity was transformed into the early Middle Ages and England was born.
