Hello there, my name is Lauretta (the one in the middle of the marketing team pic above) and I wanted to share with you my first week in my new role as Marketing Officer here at Square Chapel.
I fell in love with Square Chapel over ten years ago when I performed here with Calderdale Theatre School, appearing as a bubbly Gretal, in pigtails and leiderhosen (images are not following!). Since then I along with all locals have been delighted with the extension and reinvention of our beloved chapel theatre, into such an inspiring arts centre which it is today. Needless to say I sounded like a crazed hyena when they rang back with the job offer, I couldn’t wait to start!
My first day was a relaxed ‘get-to-know-you’ affair with lots of smiling faces of staff and volunteers mixed with the usual IT setup and logins. I really enjoyed the building tour discovering all the hidden rooms and stairways to nowhere, which the graduate archaeologist in me loved. I then spent a time organising my desk, which would rival a Paperchase window display with all the stationary I had. I am pleased that my desk faces the stairwell, so I have a good spying *ahem* viewing point, so feel free to wave into the office as you pop down the stairs.
With my work coffee mug bought (awaiting the endless amounts of caffeine), I felt ready to hit the ground running.
Dolly Parton eat your heart out! My first day working 9-5 (I’ve got that song in your head now, and I’m not even sorry).
Today I learnt all about what the marketing minds behind the scenes get up to from brochures to posters, emails to filming, tweeting to press writing, my colleagues do it all. Thankfully my days of email creation haven’t gone to waste and I got stuck into building my first “What’s On” email, which we send fortnightly to our fab customer list. As I delved into our programme, I couldn’t believe the diversity of our events, with my first email containing poetry, Queen, theatre, drawing and cookery classes! I was so excited knowing that my role would be so varied and interesting, marketing such different events to lots of people.
Day out, even though I only had two days in!
The marketing and communications team were off to Manchester for the day to attend a communications conference event CommsHero, hence the wonderful train photo from above. We had such a brilliant day learning so much from inspirational speakers such as the marketing guru’s behind Innocent smoothies, Yorkshire Tea, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Greggs. It was so inspiring to hear about how their marketing campaigns went viral with the elusive “Floor 4 Stapler” and of course the “Vegan Sausage Roll”. The best tip we took away from the day was a simple three letter word, FUN. To have fun with social media, to interact with customers as if they were your friends, to share events which excite you or funny anecdotes of the day to start a conversation. Helena Langdon formally from Innocent advised that most of her greatest social media successes were from unplanned stories which made her smile and to always be authentic.
Therefore, in my new role I hope to encompass this fun into social media I share and to always be authentic in my communications, so you can see the real human behind the marketing, spelling mistaeks and all. I’m kidding, the proof-reader in me would go nuts!
In particular our Insta-Stories on Instagram. What is that? I hear you cry out to the screen! Well it’s an exciting way to interact with our community with fun snapshots throughout the day whether short videos or images, so you can see what life is like behind the stage.
