Schools: Open Door schools programme

Open Door schools programme

Our schools outreach work is part of our wider community outreach programme, Creative Communities – a project we deliver in partnership with verd de gris Ltd and Orange Box young people’s centre.   Creative Communities is supported by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery fund and it uses the arts to change lives.

Our work with schools aims to increase access to the arts and uses the arts as a medium to increase skills and knowledge and improve life experiences for children from different backgrounds and communities in Calderdale.  We deliver a termly programme of professional performances with heavily subsidised tickets, alongside workshops in school and bespoke projects like PoetryQuest (a poetry project)  and Calderdale Young Shorts (a playwriting project)

We work inclusively across all schools in Calderdale.

“Year 1 children were very excited about the visit to the theatre. They all enjoyed it very much. Links to Literacy and Drama have been encouraged since. We have talked about performing on a stage. More importantly, we feel that our children have been provided with a spiritual experience, a long lasting experience.” Teacher, Halifax primary school

“The children loved it! They were transfixed. After the performance they were asking questions and thinking deeply about the performance. We could not believe how it grabbed the attention of all the children including those with English as an additional language, behaviour and attention difficulties and those with special educational needs. It was so inclusive.” Reception teacher, Halifax primary school

PoetryQuest 2017

PoetryQuest is a project developed by Children & the Arts, which pairs up arts venues and schools with professional poets to increase enjoyment, interest, knowledge and skills in literacy, reading, writing and performing poetry.  For our third Quest, Square Chapel worked with Year 5 and 6 pupils from three Calderdale schools: Moorside Community Primary, Beech Hill School and St Mary’s Catholic Primary (Halifax).  The schools  enjoyed a package of workshops with poets Winston Plowes and Keith Hutson, before coming together at Square Chapel to perform their own poems to a public audience.  This year, we also produced an anthology of the children’s work, which we celebrated with a fantastic book launch event on 15 June at Square Chapel, attended by the renowned actor, Penelope Wilton (an Ambassador for Children & the Arts) and our patron, actor George Costigan.
