Antony Gormley – A series of events celebrating the British artist and his work

As part of Square Chapel Art Centre’s Spring season launch, that will be hosted by BBC 6 Music presenter Chris Hawkins, taking place on Tuesday 3 December from 6pm, they will also be unveiling a special piece of art created by artist and sculptor Antony Gormley.

One of Gormley’s famous pieces of street art ‘Peg’, for the first time ever, has been exclusively adapted especially for Square Chapel. The cast has been created and sponsored by Hargreaves Foundry in Halifax and has been approved by Gormley and his team. The Halifax Foundry has created many famous works for Gormley including Angel of the North and pieces that can be seen in Gormley’s 2019 exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London

The public can see Gormley’s ‘Peg’ from the evening of Tuesday 3 December as it will be on display in the main foyer for the foreseeable.

 

There will also be a series of films and events taking place on Saturday 7 December. These include:

Antony Gormley documentary: How Art Began plus an in conversation with producer and director Morag Tinto takes place on Saturday 7 December from 4.45pm and prices from £5 to £7.

The documentary asks why do humans make art? When did we begin to make our mark on the world? And where? In this documentary, Antony Gormley sets out on a journey to see and discover the very beginnings of art. Morag Tinto has also directed other Gormley documentaries including the BBC’s Being Human, she has worked with Gormley and knows him personally too.

 

Gormley for families is a one hours Art Workshop taking place on Saturday 7 December from 1pm and costs £7.50 per person.

This experimental session for families explores a selection of different Antony Gormley inspired activities including drawing, collage, stencil and 3D work. Families will also have the chance to create their very own personalised handmade bookmark. This workshop will be led by local artist Sarah O’Boyle. All materials will be provided as part of the ticket price.

 

Silhouettes of Gormley is an art workshop for adults. It lasts around an hour and a half and takes place on Saturday 7 December at 3pm with tickets priced at £12.50 per person.

Gormley has produced many beautiful atmospheric drawings and paintings. This workshop looks at the tonal reduction drawing technique and the gestural technique that can be seen in some of Antony’s work. This workshop will be led by local artist Sarah O’Boyle. All materials will be provided as part of the ticket price.
