Square Chapel Arts Centre hosts Double Bill of Edinburgh Previews

Square Chapel Arts Centre hosts Double Bill of Edinburgh Previews, supporting artists and companies performing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2019

This July, Square Chapel will host two Edinburgh Previews made by artists and companies touring work to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August. War With The Newts by Knaïve Theatre will preview on Thursday 19 July, 8pm and How To Be Amazingly Happy! by Victoria Firth will preview on Friday 20 July, 8pm. Both have been made with funding from Arts Council England.

SQ Route is Square Chapel’s programme of talent development, which provides opportunities and support for artists and creatives at various stages of their career, based in West Yorkshire and beyond. By creating an artistic infrastructure of networks, platforms, professional development and commission opportunities, its aim is to support the ecology of innovative new work being made in Halifax and nurture a new wave of emerging and established artists who aren’t afraid to push boundaries, ask questions and be truly representative of the vibrant and varied communities we serve.

War With The Newts preview | Knaïve Theatre | Thursday 19 July, 8pm

Produced in association with Square Chapel Arts Centre, Royal Exchange Theatre and Waterside Arts

Witness the rise and fall of a new(t) capitalism. Deep in the vessels of Square Chapel, an ocean of opportunity arises as a new resource makes contact. The creators of Edinburgh Fringe 2017 sell-out Bin Laden: The One Man Show bring you a new world-premiere: Karel Čapek’s apocalyptic science-fiction satire re-imagined for a Europe of tomorrow. Following Previews at Square Chapel and Waterside, War With the Newts will run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe from 1st-28th August (excluding 2nd or 20th) before a Northern tour in the Autumn.

Tyrell Jones from Knaïve Theatre said: We are so excited to trial this ambitious show for the first time at Square Chapel Arts Centre. It has been one year in the making and the team at Square Chapel have enabled us to try lots of exciting things. We look forward to hearing thoughts and feedback from the Halifax and West Yorkshire audiences.”

How To Be Amazingly Happy! | Victoria Firth | Friday 20 July, 8pm

Supported by Square Chapel Arts Centre, ARC Stockton and CAST Doncaster

How do you find a new ‘once upon a time’ after the ‘happy ever after’ never turned up?

Victoria is on a quest to discover how you make a new life when you can’t have the one you imagined. In this big hearted, big thinking show of storytelling and physical comedy our heroine’s mid-life search for joy, identity and belonging features public displays of playfulness, private truths and sheer bloody mindedness. Join Victoria as she asks – is it possible to be happy without children?

Victoria Firth is otherwise known for being the Artistic Director of the Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield. How To Be Amazingly Happy! marks the beginning of a new journey for her as a theatre-maker and following Previews at Square Chapel and the Greater Manchester Fringe, will run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe from 1st – 27th August (excluding 13th or 14th).

Ali Ford, Theatre Programmer & Development at Square Chapel Art Centre, said:

“Much of the dynamic new work we programme is sourced from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe – it’s a fantastic international showcase for finding some of the best groundbreaking and undiscovered artists/companies from around the globe and this year we are absolutely thrilled to be supporting two shows that will feature throughout the month-long festival on the world stage. Square Chapel is breaking out of Halifax!”
