Throughout September Square Chapel Centre for the Arts will screen and perform 13 immersive pop-up films and plays in ‘Other Rooms’, spaces and venues across Halifax, exploring the architect or the town and buildings.

Director, David McQuillan said: “This has been a year like no other; for the first time in our 28 year history we are moving out of the beautiful, historic Square Chapel for three months this summer to allow the builders in to refurbish it as part of our exciting capital works and we’ll be based up at Orangebox Young People’s Centre, Halifax from now until September.

We wouldn’t normally programme in July and August, but we couldn’t bear to miss a month of programming in September so, we haven’t let the fact we have no auditorium stop us! Throughout September, we’ll be screening films and perform plays in ‘Other Rooms’ around Halifax, exploring the wonderful architecture of our town and buildings.”

The public can watch Nosferatu – based on Bram Stoker’s novel, this is a poetic fantasy horror take on the Dracula myth. The public can experience this film again but this time with a live organ playing and in the eerie candle lit setting of the Halifax Minster on Saturday 3 September.

On Sunday 4 September families are invited to The Arches at Dean Clough to see popular Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone as Square Chapel recreate The Great Hall in the converted Victorian Mill in the heart of Halifax. Families with wannabe wizards can enjoy delicious food washed down with potions, see birds of prey and sign up for broomstick lessons.

Sports fans are encouraged to get their ringside seats and watch the awe-inspiring story of one hero’s unforgettable journey with the number one boxing film, Rocky. This popular cult film full of determination and focus will be screened at the Halifax Amateur Boxing Club – and will also include live music by a local brass band as you smell the sweat in this action packed live cinema experience on Saturday 10 September.

Horror fans can experience Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, the ultimate horror film and its famous ballroom scene at The Tower House Hotel, Halifax on Friday 16 September. Will you cope as the hotel’s dark secrets are unraveled?

For more terrifying immersive cinema experiences join Square Chapel on Saturday 17 September for a camping evening trip like no other with a screening of The Blair Witch Project at Cunnery Woods, Shibden. This one is not for the faint hearted.

On Saturday 24 September Northern Soul fans can relive the era that moved a generation, literally. Experience the Northern Soul scene again or for the first time with this film, a live DJ and dance fueled night at the Arden Road Social Club.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Martin Scorsese’s hit film Goodfellas starring Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta and Robert De Niro. And on Sunday 25 September Square Chapel have joined forces with The Romeo & Juliet Restaurant, Halifax to celebrate the anniversary in style with dinner and the film with some brutally funny moments all with the backdrop of a traditional Italian restaurant.

On Thursday 29 September the public are invited to be the judge as they join Square Chapel and a jury of 12 Angry Men with a screening of this classic 1957 film and all in the backdrop of a real chamber based at Halifax Town Hall.

And following on from their successful ‘Plays in Pubs’ strand last season, Square Chapel will also be performing five new plays in various venues across Halifax as part of the ‘Other Rooms’ programme. One of these plays includes TANJA that will be performed at The Kings Church on Friday 30 September at 8pm. This is a play about a woman named Tanja who fled to safety on the shores of England and so therefore became a refugee. It aims to cover the immigration issue with this powerful story of one woman’s bravery in the midst of prejudice and abuse. TANJA is presented by Square Chapel in partnership with St Augustine’s Centre, CMBC and The Bearder Charity, to celebrate the launch of Calderdale as a Valley of Sanctuary.
