Volunteering at Square Chapel is a great opportunity to see a variety of arts events, meet people, learn new skills - and help a worthy cause.
Here’s how you can help out at our performances, events and workshops:
We’re always on the lookout for people who would like to help by working behind Square Chapel’s bar, so please do get in touch if this is something you’d like to try. Our pleasant and friendly bar serves alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and snacks and is open before and during performances and sometimes when we hire the building out. It can be very busy and you need to be calm and smiley when under pressure, but it's lots of fun too. Full training is given, it’s a really sociable volunteering role, and by way of reassurance there are no heavy beer pumps to pull and the till is straightforward! Have a look at the perks of the job at the bottom of the page!
We’re not short of volunteer ushers at the moment – we have nearly 100 of them, so there may be a short wait before you can start volunteering as an usher. The main task for a volunteer usher is to provide a welcoming face to the customers. Checking people have tickets, providing information about the performance, looking after an audience during a performance and being aware of emergency evacuation procedures are all part of being an usher. If you’d like to usher but also fancy helping out behind the bar and / or serving tea and coffee its likely we'll offer you a place as a volunteer sooner than if you only wish to usher.
Serving teas and coffee
Whether we have a performance happening, a workshop going on or have hired part of the building out, we always need people to serve tea and coffee from our hot drinks area in the bar. Please get in touch if you’re interested in finding out more about this volunteering role.
Rotas for the tasks of running the bar, serving teas and coffees and ushering are drawn up before the start of each season for the next 3 – 5 months. All volunteers are asked to indicate the tasks and events they are available to help for and once all of the rotas have been returned allocations are made, as fairly as possible, for the season ahead, and each volunteer has their volunteering slots confirmed to them. So, whilst we recruit volunteers throughout the year, it might be a couple of months before you’re into the swing of your new volunteering role.
We also need help in the following areas:
The gardens are now managed largely on a care and maintenance basis and this involves weeding, trimming and a bit of planting from time to time. The gardening group meets to do the gardening on the morning of the first and third Thursday of each month. Whatever your level of gardening experience, we’re happy to hear from you if you are able to make a commitment of 2 hours on a Thursday morning every fortnight.
We sometimes need a hand keeping our lovely old (and Grade 2* listed) building looking good. Anyone who is happy to lend a hand from time to time painting or getting their hands dirty in other ways please do get in touch! There is no regular commitment, but having people we can contact when we need some assistance is very useful.
We occasionally need a helping hand in the office doing administrative tasks such as stuffing envelopes or updating databases. The aim is to support paid staff with the day-to-day running and marketing of Square Chapel. At present opportunities for administration volunteers are limited, due to having a great bunch already helping out and us running out of desk space!
This is performance, event or hire based volunteering. It involves assisting with the lighting, sound, backdrops, positioning of chairs, electrics, helping theatre companies get in and out and some general running around. Previous technical experience is very useful, although training will be given. The ability to make quite a regular commitment is needed, and unlike for the other volunteering roles shifts do regularly exceed 4 hours in duration. There is sometimes a waiting list as we only need a small number of Technical Volunteers at any one time, but do get in touch if you are interested in finding out more.
Perks of the Job
A typical event shift (bar, teas and coffees or ushering) lasts about 4 hours. In exchange for your work as a volunteer (whether at an event or otherwise), unless you have seen the performance as an usher, you will receive a volunteer voucher entitling you to see another performance for free. You are entitled to two free drinks of your choice from the bar during your shift. Finally, Square Chapel will cover any travel expenses - although we do ask that you use the cheapest form of transport.
