Club 6.30 Roots Music and Video Project

This participatory music/video project started in March 2004 and culminated in a film screening and live music performance at Square Chapel as part of Refugee Week in June 2004. Filmmakers Graham Hardy and Andrew Shaw from Calderdale TV worked with people from Club 6.30, a drop-in centre for asylum seekers and refugees to make a short film which explores personal stories and asylum issues. The resulting film, Between the Sky and the Earth runs at 15 minutes and the soundtrack was composed and recorded by the participants with support from musician Adrian Sykes. Adrian spent a number of weeks working with the adults and children to create music using African drums and other percussive instruments, and their live performance gave them an opportunity to play with Calderdale based group Batinka. Following their performance at Square Chapel, the Club 6.30 kids were asked to perform at the launch of Eureka's new Soundscape gallery in July 2004.

Club 6.30 is a drop in centre for asylum seekers and refugees run entirely by volunteers at Calderdale Asylum Seeker Support (CASS). Anyone wishing to learn more about this project or the group can contact Maria at Square Chapel on 01422 353073 or email maria@squarechapel.co.uk
