Becoming a Square Chapel Volunteer

A great opportunity to see a variety of arts events, meet people, learn new skills - and help a worthy cause.

There are many different areas where we need your help:

Box Office

We try to have two people on the Box Office each night, and while it can be hectic, it's a brilliant learning experience. It requires a feeling of competence with a computer, and the ability to be extra cool when the queue for tickets is out of the door.

The Bar

[Behind the bar]

We have a smallish bar which serves alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. Again it can be very busy and you need to be calm and smiley when under pressure, but it's lots of fun too.

Ushering and Programmes

The main task for a volunteer is to provide a welcoming face to the customers. Checking people have tickets, providing information about the performance and being aware of emergency evacuation procedures are all part of being an usher.

Administration

Working in the office can include answering the telephone, typing volunteer rotas, coordinating volunteers, stuffing envelopes or selling tickets. You are likely to be given your own project to work on, eg. marketing a show or udating a database. The aim is to support paid staff with the day-to-day running and marketing of Square Chapel.

Technical Support

This involves assisting with the lighting, sound, backdrops, positioning of chairs, electrics, helping theatre companies get in and out and general running around.

Garden Maintenance

[Garden at Square Chapel]

The gardens are now managed largely on a care and maintenace basis, and a small working party meets most Thursdays for this purpose. A larger group meets from time to time by arrangement on some Saturdays to undertake bigger projects.

Perks of the job

In exchange for your work as a volunteer, you get a chance to see the performance you help at for free. You are entitled to two free drinks of your choice from the bar. Finally, Square Chapel will cover any travel expenses - although we do ask that you use the cheapest form of transport.
